University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy – Faculty of Hydrotechnics

The Faculty of Hydrotechnics (FH) was estabilshed in 1949 on the basis of a course in ‘Aquaculture Engineering” at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the State Polytechnics. Later, together with the faculty of Civil Engineering and the Faculty of Architecture, it forms the structure of the newly founded Higher Institute of Civil Engineering. FH is the only institution in the country where specialists in the field of hydraulic engineering are trained. The following degree programs are offered at the faculty ever since its creation: Hydraulic Structures (by 1973 – Hydro-Power Engineering), Irrigation and Drainage Engineering and Water Supply and Sewerage. From the academic 1999/2000 a new program was added – Hydraulic Engineering (in German language) and it is equivalent to the program Hydraulic Engineering and Environmental of the Technical University – Vienna, Austria. The following six departments are included in the FH structure: hydrotechnics; Irrigation and Drainage Department; Water Supply, Sewerage, Water and Wastewater Treatment Department; Hydraulics and Hydrology Department; Technical Mechanics Department and Physics Department. 21 training and research laboratories function in the Faculty.

The reason the faculty joined the UWEX project is to share experience from similar project we had financed by WB during 2002-2003. Implementing the project we established at UACEG Inter Faculty GIS Center for Education in the Area of Infrastructural Engineering. Three faculties from UACEG namely Faculty of Hydrotechnics, of Geodesy and Transportation Engineering participated in this project. As a result from it the centre was established and equipped with advanced software from different providers including DHI. The software is used for education of students and specialists from  practice. The aim we have with UWEX project is to train two new colleagues in using MIKE URBAN, because at the time of our project we had MOUSE and MIKE NET, which we latter updated to MIKE URBAN, but for it nobody was trained. Also with UWEX project we aim to update and adopt MIKE URBAN training materials for teaching purposes in our centre in Bulgarian.
